COONAWARRA (LIMESTONE COAST) PRIVATE WINE TOUR
Description
You are collected from your accommodation at 8:00am and
travel through serene pastoral land in a chauffeur driven
vehicle with an experienced wine guide to the heart of premium
red wine production in Coonawarra.
You visit Padthaway Estate and taste a selection of local
wines. Padthaway is recognised for quality Chardonnay and
the exceptional character of the varieties produced. Then
onto Naracoorte where you explore the mysteries of the World
Heritage Listed Naracoorte Caves and Bool Lagoon, recognised
by the United Nations as a Wetlands of International importance.
Wool products abound. Lunch will be alfresco or at the outstanding
Hermitage restaurant.
After lunch an option may be to stroll down Petticoat Lane
in Penola. Penola is the oldest town in the South East and
honoured as the workplace of Mary McKillop soon to be declared
a Saint.
Alternatively you may resume visiting some of the distinguished
wine producers of the Coonawarra region including Wynns Coonawarra
Estate, the oldest and most technologically advanced winery
and Balnaves of Coonawarra where you meet the Balnaves family.
Another notable winery you may visit is the small Italian
family run Zema Estate winery famous for their full flavoured
wines and Mrs Zema's preserves.
You spend the evening at either the elegant Padthaway Estate
Homestead in the heart of the wine country and dine in-house
or at Georgie guesthouse and dine at Pipers.
Next morning you meet Brian Lynn, a lecturer of Viticulture
at the local college who also has his own winery, called Majella
Estate. He has won many prestigious awards for his wines and
he will give a brief tour of his vineyards, an introduction
to the area and the opportunity to sample some of his wines.
On your return trip there are many options. You may meet
other local wine producers such as Penley Estate, Rymill Estate,
Leconfield and Bowen Estate or visit the newest classified
wine region, Mount Benson, and see vineyard plantings around
Robe, a pretty fishing village.
**Instead of returning to Adelaide you may like to take
the option of travelling via the Great Ocean Road to Melbourne.
